BRIGADA ESKWELA

Brigada Eskwela is a schools maintenance program nationwide that engages all education stakeholders to contribute their time, efforts and resources in ensuring that public schools are all set in time for class opening. It is a week-long event where local communities, parents, alumni, civic groups, local businesses, NGOs, private individuals and even teachers and students volunteer their time, skills to do minor to medium repairs and maintenance work in the schools (DepEd, 2008).

BRIGADA ESKWELA 2020 - 2021

The Department of Education implemented this year’s “Brigada Eskwela” from June 1 to October 31, 2020. It focused on the reconfigured theme: “Bayanihan sa Paaralan: Brigada Eskwela & Oplan Balik Eskwela”. The Brigada Eskwela (BE) and Oplan Balik Eskwela (OBE) are annual activities of the department that aim to fully support the preparation of parents, students and the entire school community for the coming school year. With the presence of the COVID19 pandemic, the schools are greatly challenged as it created a lot of change in the daily lives of people. Consequently, for public schools like Sto. Nino Senior High School, the challenge now lies in continuing education, while facing the challenges of mobility, safety and families’ limited resources. Therefore, it created new approach in Brigada Eskwela which focused on preparations and strengthening partnership engagement to ensure that learning continues even in the time of COVID-19. The unity among the different stakeholders such as Local Government Units and non-government organizations are evident.

“Gulayan sa Paaralan” is a program initiated by the Science teacher, Mrs. Maio Flores on 2018. After she retired on 2019, Mrs. Editha Calderon, one of the school’s utility personnel, takes good care of the plants until now. As of today, the school already planted and picked ripe vegetables such as Malabar spinach (alugbati), bitter gourd (ampalaya), papaya, water spinach (kangkong), ladies’ fingers or ochro (okra), calamansi, and ginger (luya).
